Summary

Onboard three or more new editors to the team that manages the Fedora Community Blog (AKA CommBlog).

Background

I am the de facto editor-in-chief of the CommBlog since 2023. The CommBlog is an important medium for communicating news, information, and calls-to-action for Fedora contributors. It is a contributor-focused publication. Anyone can be an author for the CommBlog and there is a public, documented process on how to propose a new article. At present, I am the primary point-of-contact for most new articles. Although there are other editors, the editors behave more independently than as a team. I am a bottleneck for most article reviews.

While I enjoy being an editor, it is a responsibility that I must balance with everything else that I do. I want to prioritize more impactful writing and communication about things happening in the Fedora community. Bringing more editors into the CommBlog team and transitioning myself to a support role allows me to shift my focus into producing my own writing instead of only reviewing other persons' articles.

Details

  • Review onboarding documentation for accuracy; update as needed
  • Share call for participation to the CommBlog editor team in the Fedora community and Red Hat intranet
  • Host a kickoff call to introduce editors, orient new editors to the CommBlog, and review community processes
  • Onboard three new contributors with the Editor role in the CommBlog
  • Clear October 2024 article review backlog and schedule all pending articles
  • Invite two other editors to host the weekly roundtable meeting at least once
  • Propose a new team project to clear out pending drafts

Outcome

Improve the overall sustainability of the CommBlog and ensure its long-term success as a supported community publishing platform for key information about Fedora.

I hosted a special edition of the weekly CommBlog editor roundtable. Instead of a Matrix text meeting, I hosted the meeting on Google Meet so that everyone could get introduced, meet each other, and I could share my screen to give a tour of the CommBlog and the processes we use to edit articles.

In attendance was @kumaradityaraj, @rgerardi, @amoloney1, @Roseline-Bassey, and others.

The kickoff call was recorded with subtitles and a transcript. Currently, this is in my RH Google Drive account and I need to distribute it and make it more widely available as a training resource for the CommBlog.

Here is a list of the links and information I shared in my screen-share today:

This effort was partially successful. I am closing as not planned because no additional work is planned at this time.
